European Parliament urges PHL to drop charges against Maria Ressa and renewal of license of ABS-CBN
A call to adopt a resolution to revoke the Philippines’ trading benefits with 27 nations of the European Union, garnered an overwhelming 626 affirmative votes, with only seven votes against it and 52 abstentions.
Europe’s parliamentarians will withdraw the Philippines’ trade grants under the (GSP+ trade benefits) granted to the Philippines if the government will not abide by the international conventions on human rights.
The September 17, 2020 resolution calls for all “politically motivated charges” against Maria Ressa and her colleagues to be dropped. The resolution also calls on the Philippine Government to renew the broadcast license of media company ABS-CBN.
