Watch as Phil shows just how Stevie Ray Vaughan’s sound isn’t just about the notes—it’s about instinct, attitude and bending the rules of what we know as music theory or what we “should” play. Watch as he demonstrates how Stevie would insert the flat five from a B minor pentatonic into an E context to create a killer tension-and-release vibe. Then he shows how he takes that exact idea and flips it: toggling between B and E, both using the flat five, to create a riff that feels fresh, but still nods to SRV!
“It’s not stealing if you disguise it,” Phil says, as he explains how those “aha” moments from his favorite players become the backbone of his own voice. And when he shifts gears to Randy Rhoads, he points out how Randy’s subtle twist—playing a minor sixth where everyone else plays major—completely changed the sound of a simple scale. That small change? It instantly became “the Randy thing” which we all recognise when we hear a solo from Randy Rhoads on record!
