What’s the real tone secret that you’re probably overlooking on your entire pedalboard?
In this Gibson Artist Greenroom clip—a chat with genre-bending guitarist Emily Wolfe—she shares why EQ is the one pedal that “just gets used all the time,” how it saves her fuzz and overdrive sounds from disaster, and why she reckons an EQ pedal lets her turn any drive into whatever she needs it to sound like.
When Emily’s asked what’s the one pedal she can’t live without, she replies, “That’s got to be the EQ.” She explains how legendary fuzz tones don’t come from some high-end (or even clean) amp but from cranking up the gain on an old amp with a decent tone. She uses two EQ pedals on her board, one for each of her overdrives, to sculpt her signature tone. Watch as she shows us exactly how to harness the fuzz by taking the bass down a notch, pumping up the mids, then dialling in a bit of high-end.
Emily also discusses other benefits of EQ pedals and how a good EQ pedal lets her switch between guitars, especially when she’s going from a humbucker™ to a P-90 or single coil, and how it keeps her sound exactly as she wants it. “There’s no such thing as a wrong EQ setting,” she says, “just whatever is best for the guitar or amp you’re using.”
