Join us as Gibson Gear Guide host Dinesh Lekhraj demos the new Epiphone Futura Explorer Custom from the Epiphone Futura Series, gives us a brief history of the Gibson Explorer™, and takes a look at what the coolest features of the Epiphone Futura series are.
The Gibson Explorer remains one of the most striking and instantly recognizable shapes in electric guitar history, and arguably the most iconic metal rock shape there is. Released in 1958, it was discontinued by 1963 before rockers in the 70s brought it back into the spotlight. Nothing quite makes a statement like an Explorer, and it has been used extensively by downpicking titans like James Hetfield, blues rockers like Allen Collins of Lynyrd Skynyrd, stadium heroes like The Edge of U2, and Epiphone’s own brand ambassador, Lzzy Hale of Halestorm.
The standout feature of this build is the Modern C-shaped neck profile paired with a compound-radius fretboard. Together, they keep chords and solos connecting fast with no hesitation, and since neck fatigue is one of the biggest drains on a guitarist, a quicker neck simply means more playing. Dinesh also calls out the ebony fretboard, which sits tonally between rosewood and maple, giving you a warmer tone with a touch of top-end clarity.
