Pippard, in his wonderful book "Elements of Classical Thermodynamics", states that "the function of thermodynamics is to link together the many observable variables so that they can all be seen to be a consequence of a few". In this lecture, I begin with this quote and explain with an example calculation, how a lot of variables can be expressed in terms of a few thermodynamic quantities to enable the minimisation of experiments.

We cover the meaning of basic thermodynamic quantities such as internal energy, enthalpy and entropy, with a derivation of configurational entropy of mixing.
