Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival brings you "Meet the Filmmakers" episode
“Dog of God”.
Interview with the directors Raitis and Lauris Abele, interviewer Ralf Sauter.
Come and step into the conversation and uncover the secrets behind these burning questions:
What cultural and religious influences did the directors wish to explore through this story?
Why did the directors feel that rotoscoping was the right artistic approach for this project?
Ask no more—this interview spills the answers you didn’t even know you were chasing.
The Latvian directing duo Lauris and Raitis Abele present their new feature-length animated film “Dog of God” (2025), a visually striking and boldly imaginative journey into the shadowed 17th-century landscape of Livonia, where hell, witches and untamed spirits slip beyond the realm of legend. Through its distinctive rotoscoped animation, the film breaks free from convention, showcasing the Abeles’ signature blend of artistic audacity and atmospheric provocation. Dog of God invites audiences to contemplate the shifting boundaries between faith, morality and freedom in a world ruled by fear and myth.

Tallinna Pimedate Ööde filmifestival toob teieni saate “Meet the filmmakers”, peaosas film “Jumala koer”.
Intervjuu filmi režissööri Raitis ja Lauris Abelega, kellega vestles Ralf Sauter.
Kuula kaasa ja saa vastused nendele põletavatele küsimustele:
1. Milliseid kultuure, usundeid ja vaatenurki soovisid režissöörid sellesse loosse tuua?
2. Mis ajendas režissööre valima filmi visuaalseks tehnikaks just rotoskopeerimise?
Tundub põnev? Ära muretse, vastused pole üldse kaugel…
Läti vendadest režissööride Lauris ja Raitis Abele uus täispikk animafilm “Jumala koer“ (2025) sukeldub sügavalt Liivimaa 17. sajandi tumedasse ajajärku, kus põrgu, nõiad ja metsloomad ei ole enam ainult legend. Rotoskopeeritud animatsioon väljub harjumuspärasest ning pakub vaatajale Abelede käekirjale kohaselt visuaalset vaimustust ja rohkelt provokatsiooni. Film kutsub üles mõtlema usu, moraali ja vabaduse piiridele.
