Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival presents to you “Meet the Filmmakers”. This episode features the film “Therapy” and its director Paavo Westerberg, in conversation with Edvinas Pukšta.

“Therapy” takes viewers to the beautiful Purekkari Cape, where a wellness centre hosts several couples seeking to improve their relationships. Over the course of five days, participants take part in sessions and exercises that demand honesty and courage. Through the therapy, they learn to reconcile, heal, avoid falling in love again, or finally let go. The film presents common problems that audiences can relate to. Paavo Westerberg hopes that “Therapy” can function like a group therapy session: viewers see familiar issues on the big screen, experience them vicariously through the film, and leave the cinema feeling cleansed of their own personal worries.
Paavo Westerberg (born 1973) is an award-winning and internationally recognised Finnish film director, screenwriter, theatre director, and playwright. He studied acting at the Theatre Academy of Finland, graduating in 2000 with a Master’s degree in Theatre Arts. Early in his career, Westerberg became known as the screenwriter of “Paha maa” (2005) and “Valge linn” (2006), both of which earned him Jussi Awards for Best Screenplay. In 2018, he made his directorial debut with the feature film “Viiuldaja”, which has been screened at over 20 international film festivals. He is also one of Finland’s leading theatre directors. In addition to his film and theatre work, Paavo Westerberg studied as a therapist in Saaremaa, where he first got the idea for making the film “Therapy”.

Viie päeva jooksul osaletakse sessioonides ja mängudes, mis nõuavad ausust ja julgust. Teraapia käigus õpitakse leppima, tervenema ja uuesti armumist vältima või hoopis lõpuks lahti laskma. Film toob vaatajateni levinud probleemid, millega saab ka ise suhestuda. Paavo Westerberg loodab, et “Teraapia” võib toimida kui grupiteraapia sessioon, mille puhul näeb auditoorium suurel linal tuttavaid probleeme, elab neid filmi vaadates samaaegselt ka ise läbi ja väljub kinosaalist puhastatuna omaenda personaalsetest muredest.

Samuti on ta Soomes üks juhtivaid teatrilavastajaid. Lisaks oma filmi- ja teatrialasele tööle õppis Paavo Westerberg Saaremaal terapeudiks ja just seal tekkiski tal idee filmi “Teraapia” tegemiseks.
