Dr Christine Ecker has developed a new way of diagnosing #autism from a 15-minute brain scan.
Autism is a spectrum condition that normally arises during early childhood, normally when a child is 2 or 3 years of age. It is defined by difficulties in the social settings like social interaction and social communication. It's currently #diagnosed just on the level of behaviour, so when someone is seen for assessment they will undergo a clinical interview as well as their parents. At present, there is no biological test to diagnose someone with autism.
For the last 4-5 years Dr Christine Ecker's team have been working on a study called AIMS that stands for Autism Imaging Multicentre Study. The aim of the project is to look at structural brain abnormalities in the brain, in autism. The project is running in collaboration with the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
