The 2011 Medical Research Council Millennium Medal was awarded to molecular biologist Professor Sir Edwin Southern for his outstanding impact on #genetic analysis and his invention of both the Southern blotting technique and #DNA microarray technology. In this video we look at the development of DNA analysis before and after Sir Ed's ground-breaking blotting process.
DNA is the fundamental molecule that underlies all life. It's the molecule that contains our genes so it contains all the information on how we are made, how we will develop, how we will respond to our environment, and how we will pass that information on to the next generation.
The MRC has made many leading contributions to the field of DNA #research. The first major breakthrough came in 1953. Molecular Biologist James Watson and Doctor Francis Crick were the first to publish a defined structure of DNA, identifying the shape of the double helix.
In 1975 funded by the MRC, Sir Edwin southern invented a method of identifying whether specific gene sequences are contained in a sample of DNA. This technique became known as the Southern Blot. Subsequently, Sir Edwin has dedicated his efforts to the field of DNA research.
