Abstract: This talk presents an innovative approach to enhancing user experience in R Shiny applications through the implementation of persistent user sessions, achieved by integrating secure httpOnly cookies and custom routing mechanisms. We illustrate how these technologies converge to eliminate the need for repeated user logins, thereby significantly improving session continuity and user satisfaction.
Our exploration begins with the design and implementation of a custom router within Shiny, which serves as the foundation for sophisticated session management strategies. This custom router is key for managing httpOnly cookies, a type of web cookie that provides security by making the cookie inaccessible to client-side scripts, thus reducing the risk of cross-site scripting attacks.
Following that we see the technical details of setting up a cookie endpoint within the Shiny application, detailing the server-client interaction necessary for cookie transmission and the required encryption of cookie values to ensure the security of the persistent sessions. Furthermore, the presentation covers the practical aspects of session persistence and strategies for cookie removal upon session termination or user logout.
