That illustrious team of Phillips and Rix have done it again; and while hardly new (Vol. I was published in 1991 and Vol. II a year later), these revealing, colourful tomes are cheaply bought, readily borrowed and remain classics of their kind: no less than 2,500 plants between them, in full colour, Americanised, and with pocket descriptions attached.
Split evenly between early and late perennials, these books are clearly labours of love: an immense undertaking, impeccably presented and sensibly composed by two seasoned pros, who certainly know their stuff. For the gardener who hasn't a clue how to differentiate between a Meconopsis and a Red-Hot Poker, help is at hand!
Vivid, visual and very, very tempting. Dig away!
