Chris Madden’s “BATHROOMS” and Barbara Sallick’s “THE PERFECT BATH” may well cover the same topic, but are as different as chalk from cheese, separated as they are by a full 20 years of decorative (and publishing) history.
These two stalwarts nonetheless served as the bulwarks behind your correspondent’s “deco loo”, a noble period piece in long decline, built in 1930, which has finally been restored to its former self, replete with stuccoed walls, 1920s fixtures, and Blaue Reiter-style works by the late lamented, and much respected, expat German painter, Fritz Brandtner.
Cabuchons, period lighting and faded curtains complete the illusion, crowned by the original “stall”, much improved, that contains the loo itself.
Both books cited were indispensable in this labyrinthine process and are warmly recommended, albeit for different reasons.
