GAUGUIN CEZANNE MATISSE: VISIONS OF ARCADIA

Art books are notoriously tricky to judge. Quality does not always equate to cost, and illustrations, all too often, don't stand up to text (or vice versa). But when they're done right, they gleam.
One such book, published by the consistently elegant Yale University Press, is Gauguin, Cezanne, Matisse; and while the exhibit it accompanies, at the Philadelphia Museum, has met with more than its share of mixed reviews, the book itself is a standout. Splendidly edited by Joseph Rishel, with lengthy essays from five seasoned contributors, it concentrates on the bucolic, pastoral style of French painting around 1900, inherited and developed from the likes of Ingres and Poussin. Citing other contemporaries as well (Derain, Rousseau and Delaunay) and with 200-odd top notch illustrations, it develops into a full-blown account of a rich and burgeoning art form.
This is one very handsome book. An Arcadian vision, indeed.
