In the cutthroat world of perfume, still dominated by the French, the British have surprised themselves of late by becoming a force to contend with in their own right. The popularity of such London stalwarts as Floris, Trumper and Penhaligon's has been more recently joined by Jo Malone, whose story is as attractive as the perfumes she sells.
From a single shop on Walton Street, around the corner from Harrods, to becoming an international name, her story is one of taste, focus and drive. Leaving aside, perhaps, the familiar tale of her youth, which could have used a bit of pruning, the book is a prime example of how to catapult from a humble background into the world of high fashion, using design, creativity and common business sense.
As a devoted supporter of her perfumes in general, and bath oils in particular ("Amber & Lavender" and "Nutmeg & Ginger" spring immediately to mind), one could be accused of bias; but even without its commercial overtones, the colourful background attached to these distinctive British brands makes very revealing reading.
