Penang’s roads are heading towards gridlock as vehicle numbers and rapid development continue to outpace capacity, a transport expert has warned.

The state had 1.8 million residents in 2024 but 2.67 million registered vehicles — nearly two for every person.

Congestion is increasingly evident across both bridges, Batu Kawan and northern approaches, with queues at toll plazas growing longer.

Professor Datuk Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah said Penang lacks detailed traffic data, risking solutions that treat symptoms rather than causes.
