For some victims, dating apps have left scars beyond heartbreak — extending to financial losses, reputational damage, physical harm and intimate images exposed online.
Luna, 28, joined a platform after a broken engagement, only to lose RM895 to a man who manipulated her emotions before turning abusive.
For her, the pain of betrayal outweighed the money lost.
Student Nurshafilah, 23, was left with a RM550 bill when her date vanished mid‑dinner.
She later discovered other alleged victims who claimed the same man stole jewellery, cash and laptops.
NGO Jejaka says such cases are far from isolated.
Victims often face blackmail and sextortion, with perpetrators saving intimate images and threatening exposure unless paid. Some have even been physically assaulted.
Jejaka provides legal referrals and peer support, but warns many victims remain silent due to stigma and fear of judgment.
