Paul Beckwith Insights: Master Chess-player, Plumber specialized in Running Toilets, Comedy, Writing
I recently finished playing in the Canadian Open Chess Tournament. Over 7 days, I played 9 tournament games finishing with 3 wins, 1 loss, 1 bye, and 4 draws. Way too many draws. In future, I will refuse draws until it is down to king vs king. Needed to be successful in chess are 1) knowledge, 2) calculation, and 3) willpower to win. All are equally important.
I am a Canadian National Master. Peak rating 2318. In my glory days, I have beaten most of Canada's top players.
Biggest game. Losing in Bermuda to Hikaru Nakamura, who is now #2 best in the world. Another big game, a draw to Susan (Zsusza) Polgar, the oldest of the Polgar sisters just before she became Women's World Champion. She referred to playing me to a draw in her book "Queen of the Kings Game" by saying that while preparing for the world championship she gave up a few draws to weak master.
I love chess. Playing it. Teaching it. Studying it. Reading books about it. Playing blitz or bullet chess on an online server on my iPhone. I grew up playing board games with my family. When I go through stressful periods in my life I play loads of chess.
The best way to improve is to analyze the games that you play afterwards with your opponent. See where you went wrong and how you could improve. I always tell my chess students that they should be very happy when they lose a chess game, because that means they have learnt a lot more from that game than they would have learnt if they had won. I tell them to look around the classroom and pick out who they think is the best player. After they pick me I tell them it has to be a classmate, and not the teacher, and they pick a fellow student. Then I point out that that student is the one in the room that has lost the most games.
