We take California State Route 74 from Palm Desert to Valle Vista. After leaving the sprawling palm-lined streets of Palm Desert, we drive up a series of dramatic switchbacks to a viewpoint offering sweeping views of the Coachella Valley below. We then head deeper into the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains. We watch as the landscape transforms from barren desert rocks to a snow-covered pine forest with views of Mt. San Jacinto. We pass over 4,917 foot Keen Camp Summit and into the town of Mountain Center. We then descend the steep and winding road into the town of Valle Vista.
The section of road between Palm Desert and Mountain Center is part of the Palms to Pines Scenic Byway. Another section of this byway runs from Mountain Center to Banning through Idyllwild. This section will be covered in the video here: youtube.com/watch?v=wpwf7p57Ft8
