We begin just outside of Kings Beach, CA. We take California State Route 267 over Brockway Summit to the town of Truckee. We drive through Truckee. We then get on Interstate 80 West and head over Donner Summit. We take the first exit after passing over the summit. This puts us on Donner Pass Road, which follows the path of Old Highway 40.
We head east on Donner Pass Road. As the name suggests, this brings us to Donner Pass. Donner Pass is situated just south of the Donner Summit that we passed over on Interstate 80. Driving it is a totally different experience, however. It is a two-lane road offering dramatic views of Donner Lake below and the mountains above. We stop at a couple of beautiful viewpoints before continuing down the road to the shores of Donner Lake.
