Paint your glow shape onto a mask with the pen tool, then drop an anchor point on that mask. A second fill layer picks the anchor up in greyscale, and a blur on the mask stack spreads it. Enable emission, turn colour off, and the blur becomes your intensity control.

We go through this kind of thing properly in the SP101 live workshop, four sessions from 15 September. Enrolment closes on the 11th.
