Onward with our adventure in New Zealand... We had the wonderful opportunity to ride the historic sidewheel paddle steamer 'Waimarie'. Built as a kit by Yarrow in England in 1899, she was shipped over and erected on the bank of the Whanganui river, very near the wharf where she steams from today. Sunk in 1952 during a conversion to internal combustion, she lay in the silt unitll in the early 1990's. In 1993 Her hull was exhumed from the Whanganui river mud. For all those years people had thought her brass fittings and gauges had been lost to time, but miraculously they were found, all sitting on the floorplates of the engine room, just where the engineers had left them. After 67,000 volunteer hours Waimarie was completely restored using almost all of her original frames covered with new riveted skin, her original engines, and a reproduction boiler. She was completed as a 'Millennium Project' and recommissioned 1st January, 2000.
