A cruise on the Steam Tug 'William C. Daldy' on the waters of Auckland Harbour, in New Zealand, escorting the Cunard Liner "Queen Anne" out to sea.
The 'William C. Daldy' is a 126' long, 32' wide 346 ton coal-fired steam tug in Auckland, New Zealand or Aotearoa . It is the largest operating steam ship in New Zealand. The ship was built on The River Clyde in Scotland by Lobnitz and Copany for the Auckland Harbour Board in 1935. Upon successful completion of builders trials, the crew set sail for Auckland, via the Mediterranean and Suez canal. The ship's top speed is 13.4 knots, but with limited bunker space they were limited to an economical average speed of 7 knots to conserve fuel. Even then stops for coal occurred about every 10 days. The overall voyage took 82 days to complete.
For the next 41 years the William C. Daldy served the Auckland Harbour with distinction, and not without it's share of drama in the 'War Years'. It had it's last job as a tug on March 9th, 1977, after which it was replaced by it's diesel-powered successor tug 'Daldy'. In 1978 the William C. Daldy Preservation Society was formed and so began the journey to restore and preserve this incredible steam tug. Without the backbreaking work of countless volunteers, generous donors, and gangplank visitors, none of this could have happened.
Machinery:
Twin 980 Horsepower Triple Expansion Steam Engines by Lobnitz
Bores and Stroke: 15" HP, 25" IP, 40" LP with a 30" Stroke driving 11' diameter propellers at 115 RPM.
Twin three-furnaced coal-fired Scotch Marine Horizontal Return-tube Boilers. 13'6" diameter and 11'6" long. Currently the crew is experimenting with burning large format wood pellets in lieu of coal for the social license, and cost.
The original Sissons 230v DC generator was replaced by a larger one built by Reader from the former H.M.N.Z.S. Minesweeper 'Kiwi'.
Weir condensate and feedwater pumps.
... and various steam-powered deck winches and windlasses.
