Along our whirlwind journey through New Zealand, we stopped in Wellington and visited the Steam Crane Ship 'Hikitia'. Neil, a volunteer with the Maritime Heritage Trust, was generous enough to show us onboard and give us a tour. Neil's father even worked on the ship when she was still operated by the Wellington Harbour Board.

Hikitia was built by Fleming and Ferguson of Paisley, Scotland, in 1926. After launching she steamed to Wellington from Glasgow, Scotland via the Panama Canal (a record distance for a crane ship).

She operated for the Wellington Harbour Board until 1990. She was to be scrapped, but was saved when Bob and Mary Box, and John and Joy Ackrill bought her. Since then she has been maintained and operated by an incredibly dedicated group of volunteers. Since her "retirement" in 1990, she has still served New Zealand, performing over 300 lifts, all with the power of steam.

Including her two main reciprocating compound steam engines, there are 11 rotative steam engines onboard, as well as several steam auxiliary pumps.

If you find yourself strolling the Wellington waterfront, swing by and take a look at this most unique ship.

Last of her kind, Hikitia is the only floating crane ship in all Australasia, and the oldest working self-propelled crane ship in the world.
