P-47s were redesigned at the end of WWII. Their role was to provide long range escort for B-29 bombers attacking Japanese home islands. Modifications included, more internal and external fuel carry volume, improved engine and turbocharger, and Pilot comfort features. Four Fighter groups were operational during WWII, 3 from Okinawa and one from Iwo Jima. 160 P-47N’s escorted 245 B-29 bomber during the Aug 8, 1945 firebombing raid against the city of Yawata.
