On March 15, 1944 the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces deployed 503 heavy and medium bomber to destroy the Italian town of Cassino. They dropped 1,171 tons of bombs. This bombing attack was followed up with a 2 hour artillery barrage. The town was completely destroyed into rubble. Unfortunately, the Allied ground troops could not follow-up with an aggressive attack due to the rubble and craters from the bombing. The attack was considered a spectacular failure of using bombing as artillery.
