But it doesn't need to be! Fortunately, comfort doesn't have to come at too high of a price with the Teton LEEF 0 cold weather sleeping bag! And for price to comfort I think this is a GREAT bag that will make your first winter or fall trip a real success! But there are a few things to consider :- It's a bit bulky- It's a bit heavy- It is really warm, but probably not warm enough for most Canadian winters without some extra layers or a sleeping bag liner, like the Reactor Extreme (affiliate link here: geni.us/Z570n3A) BUT: - Did I mention it IS really warm! For most warm sleepers, and in many less extremely wintery places, like Canada, this would be a great bag! THIS Ziplock Bag Hack: A Backpackers Dream? (Tried and Tested!) Backcountry Forward 2020-04-18 | Can the infamous ziplock bag be made better?! In this video I test a major hack for making your own any-size ziplock bag... but does it work?If there was a way to save some backpacking weight, reduce my plastic waste, and save me some pennies then I'm all for it! And that's why I HAD to test out this trick for ziplock bags to see if its the newest Backpacking Hack!I definitely think I could have done a few things differently. In the end, using an actual torch may have helped get the hanger hotter which may have made it work better. Also, as I went along I definitely got better, so it takes some practice! I've made a few more since making this video and have definitely found it to be more successful, but its still not 100%. **UPDATE: After filming this video I continued to practice this technique and got better and better at it. I was able to make quite a few water-tight ziplock bags, but could only do it consistently with the freezer bags. So a little bit of practice goes a long way! Hope you guys like the video! Vision Quest Ridge Hike | Stunning Abraham Lake & The Canadian Rockies Hike Backcountry Forward 2020-02-09 | Vision Quest Ridge in Alberta offers stunning views of the Canadian Rockies, Abraham Lake, and the surrounding David Thompson Country! So worth the climb! (Details below)A HUGE thank you to Hiker Joe for editing this video! To check out more of his work, and follow his adventures, head to www.youtube.com/hikerjoe NOTE: You do NOT need to climb that rock wall to get to the top of the first false summit! I took a side route and did some bouldering just for fun!I made my way up Vision Quest Ridge on Nov 30th, 2018 with nearly no snow on the trail, and blue bird skies surrounding me! This challenging hike in Alberta is a crown jewel in the David Thompson, Abraham Lake, and Nordegg area! With stunning views of Abraham Lake, and the Bighorn Country area, it doesn't matter where you stop on this hike, you'll be rewards with gorgeous views of the Canadian Rockies! The hike begins with an immediate incline up the ridge, and continues a steady steep climb until hitting a small "plateau" that marks the "vision quest" site. Just in the trees you'll notice the ground drop and then level off, offering a great spot to set up "camp" for the indigenous people's historic vision quests. Then the trail continues back up along a steep cliff offering fantastic views of the valley below and Abraham Lake at the bast of the mountain. A few spots require using your hands to support as you take some steps, but nothing technical. After more climbing, you'll soon "summit" the first false summit, which is really just the start of the ridge. About 300 meters (approx 1000ft) ahead there will be a beautiful summit looming in front. It's an easy and mostly level walk to the base of the cliff. Any further, however, would require scrambling skills, and sadly, that is also just another false summit. But if you're up for the challenge, and have the experience to do it safely, do it! I didn't because I was running out of time and daylight, but I plan to return! If you're in the area, I highly recommend this hike! While I'm still not 100% sure if I've been won over to backpacking quilts over my traditional mummy bag, I DEFINITELY have been won over to this quilt! With it's lightweight design, and warm comfort rating, it is the perfect "around the campfire" blanket and works just as well around the house as it does out in the field! Pika Chirping On A Mountaintop (North American Rock Pika) - Backcountry Forward Backcountry Forward 2019-05-22 | I found this little Pika running around and chirping his little squeak on top of a mountain. He runs every time I sniffle, but I got so close to him! I named him Kevin. The North American Rock Pika is native to the Canadian Rockies and likes making their dens in the crags of rocks on cliffs and occasionally mountain tops. This Pika let me get very close and was curious about me, but very cautious. Every time I sniffled (because it was a cool day) he would scurry away, then let me get close again, then scurry away when I sniffled again. It was a special moment with my new found Pika friend.Pikas do not squeak. It's more of a chirp or an "eeep". You can distinctly hear his chirp 4 times in this video and see him do it on the last one! Pikas aren't actually related to mice, they are closer to the hare and rabbit family. Rawson Lake / Sarrail Ridge Pt. 1: To The Lake! (What To Know!) - Backcountry Forward Backcountry Forward 2018-11-03 | Rawson Lake is a gem of Peter Lougheed Prov. Park in Kananaskis. But even more exquisite is the hike to Sarrail Ridge, just beyond! This trail also needs to the more difficult Sarrail Ridge. A short hike from the Upper Kananaskis Lake Trailhead and up a moderately steep trail leads you to an alpine gem! In the warm summer months from July-Aug Rawson Lake is an ideal spot for a mountain picnic or even a dip in the icy waters to cool down. You can even go fishing! With 320 meters of elevation to climb, be prepared to take a few stops on the way up the 3.9 km path to Rawson Lake. For those who are feeling particularly adventurous, Rawson Lake Trail leads to the infamous Sarrail Ridge! Sarrail Ridge offers unparalleled views of the Upper Kananaskis Lake in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. It is also one of the more popular difficult hikes in the region. It's another 350 m of elevation but in much short distance. This means Sarrail Ridge is a VERY steep mountain hike, and should only be attempted experienced hikers in ideal conditions. The question is: is it all that it's made out to be? In this review, I make (for the first time) this backpacking meal and test the Ramen Bomb out in the backcountry of Canada. Without a doubt, the Ramen Bomb has some amazing pro's as far as backpacking meals go. First, it's a VERY affordable option (less than $5 in most places). Second, it really is quite tasty! Third, the Ramen Bomb offers a powerful punch in calories and protein, more than most backpacking meals!The downside, however, is it's a lot of food! Perhaps too much, it'd be better if it was proportioned at home and you only made half on the trail. Furthermore, while the Ramen Bomb IS tasty, it's not something you'd want to eat repeatedly, and it definitely is lacking in pretty much all other nutritional considerations.But that won't stop me from bringing it and making it again!
