After years in development, numerous prototypes and countless field testing trips, Joe V from Zpacks has come out with a truly groundbreaking freestanding tent for situations when the ground is hard, sandy or on a wooden tent platform or when stakes just don't work or when carrying trekking poles are just not your thing.
Zpacks now has a freestanding option for you.
Note: You can go stupid light with Big Agnes Crazy light freestanding tent range (Fly Creek Carbon, Tiger Wall Carbon series tents) which DCF fabric and Carbon fiber poles.
But if you want to it to last more than one trip without getting a hole or massive rip or tear in the way too fragile 0.34oz DCF fly or 0.51oz floor floor, then the Zpacks Free Duo is a much better mix of function, durability and weight, with thicker carbon poles, 0.55 - 0.75oz DCF fly & 1.0oz DCF floor
I would recommend the 0.75oz spruce green DCF fabric option for the Fly for added durability and lifespan for very little weight penalty (2oz extra)
That's my initial 2 cents assessment.

Feb 2020 update: Thanks to Darwin on the trail's efforts, Zpacks has now re-released the Altaplex for 2020. Happy days! It is lighter (15.5 oz vs 17.9 oz) & slightly shorter as it only needs a 56-58" pole vs 58-60" pole for 2017 models which is much more achievable with a single long trekking pole. This may well be the new best ultralight tent ever made.

* Set up on a level ground! Just the slightest tilt can screw up my sleep - Claus Villiam
* Get some foam ear plugs - The Unprofessional Lurker
* Sleep outside better than inside if its raining and or windy bliss love it -

* when alone in backcountry I remind myself that I’m safer with the bears and moose than I would be with the people in the city! That helps me to fall asleep. a travel pillowcase stuffed with my down jacket works well for a pillow in cold weather, while a small travel pillow helps me sleep better in warm weather when I don’t have the jacket to use - David George
* hike a 20+ mile day. - Backpacking videos
* . I use a 1 liter smart water bottle. I have an extra cap that I poked a bout 15 holes in using a red hot safety pin. It makes a great shower that doesn't use the water up too fast. I can completely shower from head to toe with soap in a single litterer of water. Plus, as long as the bottle is completely full of water, I can heat the water right in the fire. I definitely feel loads better after I get clean. How to do it: So, heating the water is just to take the cold edge off. I've heard you can actually boil water in a plastic bottle, loads of vids on that but I just hold it in the flame a bit or set the bottle close enough to get it warm. 10 to 15 minutes next to a moderate fire is plenty. Again just to take the edge off the cold. The shower mechanics kind of works like this: hold the bottle upside down over your head and let it spray on your head and shoulders while you use your other hand to spread it all about. Just trying to get wet all over. Should take less that a quarter of the bottle. Then set the bottle down and soap up with biodegradable liquid soap. Then rinse, always from the top down spraying with one hand and rubbing with the other. Again, about a quarter of the bottle. You cant gat all the soap off with one rinse so that's when you have to put the bottle down again and just scrub down again which helps dilute the soap more. Rinse again, scrub again and by the time you are using the last quarter of the water you should be well rinsed. Swap the cap out for tomorrow's drinking water. - David Schuetz

WARNING: 22 June 2019 - Slight model change to the Half Insert 2 which removes the pole cap from the Half Insert 2 in favour of Mitten hooks threaded onto Half-Insert 2 Bungee cords above its roof. This may cause incompatibilities with pre 2017 Ultamid 2 tents which have no loops sewn into the Ultamid 2 Apex. These loops in the roof Apex are what you clip the mitten hooks from the bungee cords of the Half Insert 2 on to. If you are in this situation and own a pre-2017 Ultamid 2 and wish to buy a current new Half Insert 2 for it, Hyperlite has told me they will happily send you a pole cap free of charge to make it work with your older Ultamid 2. See below.
Hyperlite response 25 June 2019 -
"Originally, we provided the Pole Cup with all of our Half Inserts to help this new product adapt to the older style Ultamid shelters which did not have the upgrade we added [to 2017 Ultamid 2 tents with attachment loops sewn into the APEX] at the time of release. This upgrade is minor and does not change the structural integrity of the shelter, yet rather add another layer of functionality and adaptability. We simply added two small loops onto the inner cone where you place the handle of your trekking pole as the center support pole. This allows the Half Insert to unclip from the top panel and slide its shock cord through those two loops for an easy, and clean set-up. We were getting many inquiries from customers asking what the use of this Pole Cup was and why it came with their Half Insert. After hearing that a number of our customers were either getting rid of these or sending them back we realized that our trial run for this adapter piece was coming to a close. With that said, we have a number of Pole Cups on hand and we are happy to send them out to customers completely free of charge. Being a small company, it can make a massive impact on our Production when we do not need to produce an item any longer and we are able to use that capacity in another area for greater efficiency. Your timing is impeccable because we are currently in the midst of this change and we have only recently exhausted our inventory of Half Inserts that have been inspected and packaged with Pole Cups attached. The photos that we have on our product page still reflect the Pole Cup, yet we have taken the Pole Cup out of the 'Features' section of the page and will most likely be updating our photos shortly. In regards to the Ultamid Shelter Vent Flap, we removed this portion of the shelter due to numerous reports from customers that they were not performing as noted for their given weight. We were able to take these off of the shelter with no change to condensation control, breathability, or water-resistance. The Velcro closure would also affect the mesh over time causing small runs and pulls in the mesh, this is no longer the case with the redaction of this piece. All our current products are compatible and if customers have an Ultamid prior to 2017 we are more than happy to get them a Pole Cup to help adapt to that older style."

I will endeavour to do an updated video to highlight these differences in the support system of the Half Insert 2.

I ordered and paid for this baby over 8 months ago - a leap of faith - and since then thousands of people have tried to order one of these tents and been unsuccessful. This tent has captured the imagination of thousands of UL hikers mostly due to Dan Durston's re-imagination of what a UL tent should be, the quality of his design, the quality of the tent and the quality of his extensive personal responses to the hundreds and hundreds of questions, queries, criticisms. Well done Dan. His priorities with this tent are:
Priority 1: Functional first. Super simple fast, dry setup with just 5 stakes & high protection from all elements (rain & wind) & good protected space for gear.
Priority 2: Ultralight - as light a weight as can be for a very cheap price ($200 USD) - 800- 900 grams for Double skin, spacious tent that offers excellent protection and heaps of space for gear.
