November 23, 2007 - For as good as Ovechkin had been in his first two seasons (163 GP - 98 G - 100 A - 198 PTS), it wasn't enough to make the Caps a contender on its own. After the Caps traded Dainius Zubrus, Ovechkin's mentor and arguably the Caps' second best forward, at the deadline a year prior, 2007-08 signaled a new era in Caps history - generally referred to by fans as the "Rock the Red" era, for the team's new slogan after changing their logo and jerseys from the white Screagle and black Capitol building jerseys for a modernized red white and blue version of their inagural logo. The season also signalled the arrival of Nicklas Backstrom, a 4th overall pick in 2006 whose selection was announced by none other than Ovechkin himself. The start of the season did not inspire confidence, however. A league-worst 6-14-1 start led to the firing of head coach Glen Hanlon. The Capitals brought in Bruce Boudreau, the head coach of their AHL-affiliate, the Hershey Bears, a team that had won their league championship just two seasons earlier under Boudreau. Ovechkin spent most of the game on a line with Chris Clark and Viktor Kozlov, but in overtime, the Great 8 found himself on the ice with the rookie Backstrom. Ovechkin drove down the wing before feeding Backstrom in the slot, who deked out Marty Biron to put home the game-winner. It marked just the second goal the two had ever combined on, and the first with each player receiving primary points on the play. As the season went along, Ovechkin found Backstrom centering his line more and more frequently until the two were starting every game together. The two would go down as one of the great duos of all-time as well as the undisputed greatest duo in Capitals history, with both players sitting atop the Capitals' career points leaderboard by a wide margin.
