Fueled in part by the deficit and the weak call, Ovechkin helped a Washington comeback effort to tie the game before the end of the second period. In the third period, Ovechkin gave the Caps the lead with his 22nd career hat trick, and second in as many games. The game would eventually go to a shootout, where the Capitals would pull off the victory. The back-to-back hat tricks gave Ovechkin 28 goals just 31 games into the season, the fastest he had ever scored that many.
