March 25, 2008 - Fresh off becoming the first NHL player in 12 years to score 60 goals, Alex Ovechkin sat on the edge of breaking a Capitals franchise record. Tied with Dennis Maruk who had held the record since the 1981-82 season, Ovechkin needed just one goal to set the franchise's new single-season goal-scoring record. After a first period that saw the Great 8 do just about everything but score, Ovechkin found the back of the net halfway through the second to set the record outright. The goal was also his 107th point of the season breaking his previous career high he set as a rookie. Despite the goal being his only point on the scoresheet, he made his presence felt in other ways with a very young-Ovechkin-like 11 shots and 4 hits. He would push the record to 65 by the end of the season, also setting the single-season record for a left winger.
