December 31, 2021 - With over a third of his career goals coming on the man advantage, it came as no surprise when Alex Ovechkin began to threaten Dave Andreychuk's career record of 274 power play goals. Heading into the 2021-22 season just 6 shy of becoming the all-time leader, it seemed all but a given that the Great 8 would break the record soon. The Capitals' captain started the year in typical fashion with 22 goals in his first 32 games, but the majority of his offence was coming at even strength. In the Caps' final game of 2021, Ovechkin finally broke through with a goal that crossed the line just before the power play expired. The late goal gave Washington the lead, and Ovechkin added an empty-netter to seal the victory for his team. Ovechkin would go on to become the first player to score 300+ power play goals in the NHL, pushing the new record to a total that will likely remain untouched for a very long time.
