March 31, 2026 - In his first 20 seasons in the NHL, Alex Ovechkin had scored 30 goals in all but one - a 45-game injury and Covid-shortened 2020-21 season (24 goals). Against a team he had already scored his 30th against on three prior occasions (2009-10, 2015-16, 2022-23) and with the hunt for a playoff spot still alive, the Great 8 delivered one of the best games of his age-40 season, with two big hits on Cam York early in the game. Late in the period, Ovechkin chipped home a loose puck in front of the net to hit the coveted 30-goal plateau and extend his NHL record to 20 seasons. He joined Gordie Howe, Teemu Selanne, and Johnny Bucyk as the only players in NHL history with 30 goals at age 40 or older. Ovechkin added a second goal in the third period to give the Caps breathing room on the way to a huge late-season Caps win against a team they were jockeying with for the last playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division standings.
