October 7, 2006 - Coming off a marvelous rookie season that saw Ovechkin take home the Calder Trophy as the best first-year player in the league, expectations were high for Ovechkin heading into his sophomore season. The season kicked off with a disappointing 5-2 loss in New York, where the Great 8 finished with no points and -4 rating. A chance for redemption presented itself just two days later as the Capitals hosted the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes for their home opener. After an uneventful first period, Ovechkin began to find his rhythm. Ovi began firing shots left and right, which came as little surprise given he led the league in shots on goal by a whopping 67 the year prior, eventually racking up seven in just the second period. Despite the barrage of shots, the reigning Conn Smythe winner, Cam Ward, had yet to let in one of Ovechkin's nine shots through the first 40 minutes. The dam finally broke in the third period when Ovechkin's 11th shot of the night gave the Caps a 3-2 lead. Ovechkin would record another four shots, including a deflection goal to double the lead, helping lead Washington to their first win of the season, along with the first hat trick of Alex Semin's career - youtu.be/u0wq4gSCnP4.
