November 30, 2019 - While the Capitals (18-4-5) had gotten off to an impressive start to the 2019-20 season, the Detroit Red Wings (7-18-3) had started the season about as far in the other direction as a team can. As the saying goes - "you can only play who's in front of you", and for Alex Ovechkin the saying might be more like "you can only score on the goal in front of you". Ovechkin played his part in the first 58 minutes, registering a goal and an assist to help the Capitals get out to a 3-2 lead. The NHL's eventual all-time leader in empty-net goals would add two more to complete the hat trick and the four-point night. While it may go down as the "easiest" hat trick of his career, as Ovi said after the game - "A hat trick is a hat trick". The Great 8 also made his third goal happen himself, stripping the puck from Dylan Larkin before fighting through Filip Hronek to score what would have been an automatic goal due to Hronek's interference, and was then clipped by Dylan Larkin (most likely on accident) as the Red Wings' forward was focused on breaking his stick on the goal post in frustration.
