While 28th may not seem like an important milestone, it was the player he would tie that was more significant. Maurice Richard was hockey's original top goal-scorer. The legendary Canadiens right wing was the first player to ever score 50 goals in a season, as well as the first to score 500 career goals. The NHL's trophy for the league's leading goal scorer, an award Ovechkin won a record nine times, is named in his honor. After tallying two assists in the game, the Great 8 managed to sling a shot from his office past Montreal goaltender Carey Price to tie the Richard in the city he had played for his entire career.
