On his first shift, the Great 8 sent a strong message with a crunching hit on Anton Stralman, before setting the screen on Michal Kempny's series-opening goal. Before the end of the first period, Ovechkin hammered home his 9th goal of the playoffs to put Washington ahead 2-0. Ovechkin would add an assist as the Capitals won convincingly to take a 1-0 series lead over the #1 seed in the East.
