December 13, 2022 - As Alex Ovechkin climbed the NHL's all-time goals leader board, the milestones and clubs he joined kept getting more and more exclusive. Already in third place on the career goals leaderboard, the Great 8 had his sights set on one of the most exclusive clubs in NHL history - the 800-goal club. Only two players, Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky, had ever put the puck across the goal line 800 times in their career. Ovechkin wasted no time after puck drop, scoring 798 just 24 seconds into the game - the 3rd fastest goal of his career. Unfortunately for anyone watching at home, ESPN, who had an exclusive national broadcast of the game, decided that taking over half the screen with Chris Chelios reading out Chicago's starting lineup was more important than actually showing the game, resulting in the only goal of Ovechkin's career without a television broadcast call. Thankfully, John Walton of the Caps Radio Network was also there to provide a call that fans can actually enjoy. Ovechkin would add another before 10 minutes of the game had elapsed, and provided an assist in the second stanza. As the final period began, all eyes were on number 8 in white. After Anthony Mantha forced a turnover behind the net, a scramble for the puck ensued, and Ovechkin, as always, found himself in perfect scoring position. Mantha didn't even think about shooting it before finding the Capitals captain for the slam dunk hat trick goal.
