Viktor Jerofejew ist nicht nur als Romanautor, sondern auch als Essayist und scharfsinniger Beobachter der russischen Politik bekannt. Für seine im Original bereits 1999 veröffentlichte »Enzyklopädie der russischen Seele«, in der er sich kritisch mit den Traditionen seines Landes auseinandersetzt, war er von nationalistischer Seite starken Anfeindungen ausgesetzt.

Viktor Jerofejew is known not only as a novelist, but also as an essayist and keen observer of Russian politics. He was exposed to strong hostility from nationalists for his »Encyclopedia of the Russian Soul«, published in 1999, for his critical examination of the traditions of his country.
