Work is underway to upgrade Troutbeck wastewater treatment works as part of our wider programme to improve water quality across the Windermere catchment. The project will introduce FujiClean, an innovative, low-carbon and chemical-free wastewater treatment process originally developed in Japan, making us the first water company in Europe to use this technology at smaller rural sites. FujiClean uses natural biological processes to produce high-quality treated wastewater in a compact system, making it particularly well suited to sensitive rural locations like Troutbeck. The scheme is being delivered through a collaborative partnership with Haigh Environmental, the UK supplier of FujiClean, who have helped bring this technology into the mainstream and support its introduction at sites like Troutbeck. A temporary FujiClean unit will be installed later this year, followed by larger permanent units, with the site landscaped and new screening planted once works are complete.
