In 2020, we worked with the Cumbria Beaver Group to help reintroduce beavers back into Cumbria, meet Glen and Dragonfly. The aim of the group is to enable a well-planned reintroduction of beavers with the support of enclosed scientific release trials and community engagement. Beavers provide many environmental benefits such as flood risk alleviation, improved water quality and habitat creation for other wildlife. After a successful trial, two became four! This summer Glen and Dragonfly successfully bred, welcoming two kits to the Lowther Estate. The Cumbria Beaver Group is made up of Cumbria Wildlife Trust, The RSPB, Lowther Estates and Eden Rivers Trust working in consultation with Natural England, the Environment Agency, United Utilities, Forestry England the University of Cumbria and others.
