This footage was recorded not long before the wildfire swept through our trapline and destroyed our cabin.
At the time, I simply wanted to capture the quiet beauty of this little lake and the surrounding country — the stillness of the water, the trees, the feeling of being far from the noise of the modern world. Looking back now, the video carries a different weight because so much of what appears here has since been burned.
It is sad to think about what was lost. So many memories were tied to this place. But the north has always worked in long cycles. Forests burn, and over time they return again. Grass comes back first, then willow, then young poplar and spruce. The scars soften with the years.
And just as the land will recover, so will we.
The cabin can be rebuilt. Trails can be reopened. New memories can still be made there.
So although this video now feels like a glimpse into a vanished moment in time, it is also a reminder that nothing in nature truly stands still forever — not destruction, and not renewal either.
