In recent years, the conversation around Alberta independence has grown
more intense and more widespread than at any time in recent memory.
Many Albertans feel frustrated by federal policies affecting energy,
firearms, and resource development, and for some the idea of Alberta
charting its own political path has become an increasingly serious topic.
But as political movements grow, they can also attract voices that push
the conversation in unhealthy directions.
In this video I explore a political concept sometimes called
“horseshoe politics” — the idea that when political ideologies are
pushed far enough to the extremes, the far right and the far left can
begin to resemble each other in troubling ways, somewhat like the
Nick Fuentes phenomenon infecting American politics currently.
I discuss why this pattern sometimes appears within growing movements,
how anger can slowly transform legitimate political concerns into
something more destructive, and why it is important for any movement
to guard against rhetoric that turns political disagreement into
hostility toward entire groups of people.
This video is not an argument against discussing Alberta’s future.
Rather, it is an invitation to keep those conversations serious,
thoughtful, and respectful.
