A few cool days may have slowed Oregon’s fire season, but the weather is about to shift again, giving more fuel to fires across the state.
“We do still have active wildfires in the area around the Willamette Valley and northwestern Oregon,” said Jon Liu, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland, on Tuesday.
Progress has definitely been made. As of Tuesday, 33 fires were burning 34,345 acres across the state, compared to over 1.1 million acres at the beginning of August.
But the danger is not completely behind us. Among the still-active fires was the Copperfield Fire in Klamath County near Chiloquin, which had reached 3,656 acres and burned seven residences and several outbuildings as of Tuesday morning, according to Klamath County Emergency Management and the Oregon State Fire Marshal.
