It was fantastic to create a different puzzle feeder for the orangutan at Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve during a recent team build. These tall feeders offer a completely different challenge to the usual shelf-stack feeders.
The food starts on the top shelf, with each shelf sitting on a slope with three holes in the polycarbonate on the orangutan's side. They must flick the food to get it over the crest and down onto the next shelf, however, if they don't get it right, the food returns to the starting position. Once the food makes its way to the bottom of the box, it can be extracted through a hole.
The keepers can refill and clean the box by simply lifting out the polycarbonate slide.
With such an incredibly intelligent species it's so important to keep their brains occupied, which is why the keepers were keen for us to test out this new design. And along with other enrichment devices (including from a previous team build) they all work to offer food in many different ways.
A huge well done to the team for building these feeders, you all did an amazing job!
