I'm a biologist. I don't know much about thermal stuff. But I do know something about what grows on them. The springs colors come from species of thermophilic bacteria and algae, organisms known as extremophiles because they can survive in extreme, to us anyway, conditions. In this case high temperatures. The following info was very kindly provided by Donovan Blahut (Fans and Elevators with Mr. Pullchain on YouTube). Although there is no way to know its exact age, Orange Spring Mound is well over 5,000 years old due to the little amount of water that comes out from it's vents, and the fact that it is gigantic. To see Orange Spring Mound in person drive the upper terrace loop. You will see it on your left as you get to the southwestern most corner of the loop. Stop and look at its miniature terraces. They are the reason I love this thermal feature.
