Alligators haven't changed in several hundred million years and their brains are really small. But that doesn't stop alligator mamas from protecting their babies after they hatch. These were in Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge in southeast Texas. Due to over hunting alligators were once on the Endangered Species list. They have been off that list for decades as their numbers rebounded, probably faster than any other animal. Their rapid increase in population is believed to be due to the large numbers of nutria that became their prey, an invasive species related to rats and beavers.
