Operation Vengeance was the American military mission carried out on April 18, 1943, to eliminate Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
During the Solomon Islands campaign in the Pacific Theater of World War II, U.S. intelligence intercepted Yamamoto’s flight plans. Acting on this information, United States Army Air Forces fighters took off from Kukum Field on Guadalcanal to intercept his aircraft.
Yamamoto’s Mitsubishi G4M1 “Betty” bomber was shot down near Bougainville Island, killing the admiral and marking a significant psychological victory for the Allies.
