On September 17, 1944, troops of the British 1st Airborne Division landed west of Arnhem as part of Operation Market Garden, with one of their primary objectives being the capture of the road bridge over the Rhine. The airborne troops encountered far stronger German resistance than expected, and only a small force of approximately 740 men under the command of Lieutenant Colonel John Frost succeeded in reaching and securing the northern end of the bridge.
For five days, Frost’s men held their isolated position against repeated German attacks, despite being heavily outnumbered and lacking reinforcement or resupply. Subjected to intense artillery, tank, and infantry assaults, the defenders fought stubbornly until their ammunition and medical supplies were exhausted. On September 21, 1944, the surviving British troops were finally overwhelmed and forced to surrender.
In recognition of the courage and sacrifice of the airborne soldiers who fought there, the bridge was officially renamed the John Frostbrug on December 17, 1977.
