The Battle of Waterloo took place on June 18, 1815, near Waterloo. The French Imperial Army, commanded by Napoleon Bonaparte, faced a coalition army made up of troops from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Hanover, Brunswick, and Nassau under the command of Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, along with a Prussian army led by Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher.
Wellington’s defensive line was anchored on the right flank by Hougoumont Farm. The battle began with determined French attacks against the farm. At first, the North Gate was left open to allow supplies to enter and wounded soldiers to withdraw to Wellington’s main line. Seizing the opportunity, French troops maneuvered around the farm and rushed through the open gate. Around 30 French soldiers forced their way into the courtyard, but they were quickly overwhelmed and eliminated in fierce hand-to-hand fighting. British guards managed to shut and secure the gate, and Hougoumont remained a vital defensive strongpoint for the rest of the battle.
Today, visitors can see the memorial near the North Gate known as Mémorial de Hougoumont, which commemorates the dramatic events that unfolded there on June 18, 1815.
