Presenter and former ‘Newsround’ journalist Sonali Shah interviews David Olusoga in the opening Keynote event at CMC 2023.
David has been giving serious thought to how vital the kids’ media sector is in supporting the well-being of millions of young people in this country and around the world – at a time when being young is tough. He’ has strong views on how are we contribute to their better and truthful understanding of the world they live in and how we connect them to that world in a meaningful way. The future depends on them, so it also depends on us.
David Olusoga is a British-Nigerian historian, broadcaster and BAFTA award-winning presenter and filmmaker. He is Professor of Public History at the University of Manchester. His books include the award-winning Black and British: A Forgotten History. David’s first book for younger readers, Black and British: A Short Essential History, was shortlisted for the Waterstones Prize and won the Children’s Illustrated & Non-Fiction book of the year at the 2021 British Book Awards. Black and British: An Illustrated History won the Children’s Choice Award of the SLA’s Information Book Awards. In 2019 he was awarded an OBE for services to history and community integration. Black History for Every Day of the Year by David and Yinka Olusoga, illustrated by Kemi Olusoga, will be published in September.
Sonali Shah is currently a host of BBC One’s Escape to the Country and major events for the BBC. She is also the Sunday Morning Breakfast presenter on Magic Radio, often hosts episodes of ITV’s Tonight and regularly appears on Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch. Sonali has released her first children’s book, The Best Diwali Ever, this year.
The Opening Keynote includes a presentation by Changemaker Izzy Garbutt. The 17 year old Member of Youth Parliament from Wigan.
